Bruno Mars was one of the most successful musicians of the last decade, and he really left his mark on the music industry. But then, he took a step back and focused his attention elsewhere. Instead of a solo artist, he is now part of the group Silk Sonic.
But how has this decision impacted his music and, ultimately, his net worth? While his music may not be the same as before, that doesn't mean his change of career decision was a bad one.
Bruno Mars is celebrated for his tracks "Uptown Funk" (although this was at the center of controversy), "Just the Way You Are," and "24K Magic."
His music has inspired artists and fans alike, and his net worth is estimated at an impressive $175 million – it is difficult to gauge just how much of that was made in the past and how much he makes now, but we can agree that the musician is not short of cash.
This also allows him to explore passion projects, although he always appears to deliver with the same commitment to quality.
Fans of the singer will remember that he took time away from the music industry before returning in 2016 with "24K Magic." He is the type of artist who can do these things, and when he returns, he still commands an audience.
Fans have questioned Bruno Mars's decision to form Silk Sonic. While he has continued to enjoy musical success, perhaps the most telling thing about the collaboration is just how much the singer loves the music he is creating now.
"It's just that we feel our purpose is this. We need to light up a stage, put the fear of God in anyone performing before us or after us, and bring so much joy to the people we're in front of and the people listening," Mars told Rolling Stone in a 2021 interview.
"Especially in times like the time we're in right now. For me? I know I wasn't listening to any depressing music. We're already in a weird spot — so to try to get in there? No! I want the escape!"
Given their interviews together, they also appear to have a lot of fun and connect as musicians. This is important, as it will influence their sound.
Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak are the duo behind Silk Sonic. The start of the group forming would happen as early as 2017 after meeting on tour in Europe. But it would not be until 2021 when they would make things official. Taking to Instagram, Mars shared the news. "We locked in and made an album. The band's called Silk Sonic," he wrote in February 2021.
And now they've released an album, "An Evening With Silk Sonic." Their lead single is "Leave the Door Open." Mars said of their album in an interview with Apple Music, "We needed this to work. We just wanted it to feel like… feel special instead of trying to get too cute with the concept. It's like, man, what's more special than Anderson .Paak behind a drum set singing a song and me having his back when it's my turn, you know? And the band moving in the same direction, it was just like… it's like a musician's dream, being in the studio recording a song like that."
There was some buzz around it, with the duo initially putting it up for Grammy consideration, later withdrawing it.
"We truly put our all on this record, but Silk Sonic would like to gracefully, humbly, and most importantly, sexually, bow out of submitting our album this year," Mars said of their decision. "We hope we can celebrate with everyone on a great year of music and partake in the party. Thank you for letting Silk Sonic thrive."
To say that Mars' decision to go from a solo artist to a duo was a bad idea is not true. Variety notes that the group was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 2022 and won all of them. Not only this, but they also got to perform. Award shows aside, their album has received critical praise.
NME voted it five stars (out of five), and writer Sophie Williams said this: "Mars and .Paak's deliberate approach to pastiche is consistently validated by their extreme attention to detail, meaning that their debut album, 'An Evening With Silk Sonic', is far from a two-man recreation of a specific era." Basically, if you have not been taking note of Silk Sonic, that would be a mistake because, musically, they are brilliant.
Speaking of their decision to collaborate, Mars told Apple Music's Zane Lowe (via Billboard), "And we kept coming up with music. It felt like why you fall in love with music in the first place. And jamming with your buddy… There's no plan, just working out the parts and trying to excite each other… that's why this wouldn't happen if it didn't make sense and it didn't feel natural and organic. This was a series of events that led us to 'Man, why don't we just do it?'"
In the same interview, .Paak also shared what it was like working with Mars. "A lot of people do collabs these days, but I don't think they understand what it's like to go in and get work with someone that's challenging everything," he said. "'Like, 'Did we do this right? Did we do this right? Should we try this right?' You know for me, a lot of it is about having fun, but he was really the first person, the first period of bringing it to my attention that sometimes you got to go through hell to get heaven."
They have a Las Vegas residency, with several shows announced in 2023 at the Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas, Nevada. They would initially sign this contract for 13 shows (which will also put more money in the bank). So, is Silk Sonic a success? Some would say a big YES!
