According To Anne Hathaway, This Is What Working With Meryl Streep Is Like

In 2006, Anne Hathaway broke clear of the everyday teenage roles she’d starred in up till that time and took on a new problem: playing Andrea ‘Andy’ Sachs in what is now considered cinematic gold, A Devil Wears Prada. In the film, which follows the story of an aspiring journalist who works as the assistant of a dragon-like editor at a height New York fashion mag, Hathaway starred reverse some of the legendary (if now not probably the most mythical) names in cinema: Meryl Streep, who is regularly referred to as the greatest actress of her generation.

Having starred in a string of blockbuster movies, from Sophie’s Choice to Kramer Vs. Kramer to Out of Africa, Meryl Streep has established her place as an icon of the display screen due to her talent to embody and convey to life any character in any respect. But what is working with her actually like? Read on to find out what Anne Hathaway had to say about starring opposite this film goddess.

Staying In Character

We already guessed that Meryl Streep is the type of actress who by no means shall we the rest ruin her performance. According to Anne Hathaway, the long-lasting big name remains in character whilst on set at some stage in filming in order that nothing throws off her portrayal on display screen.

Speaking to Graham Norton (by the use of Vanity Fair), Hathaway printed, “When I met her she gave me a hug … I’m like, ‘Oh my god, we are going to have the most efficient time on this film.’ And then she’s like, ‘Ah sweetie, that’s the last time I’m nice to you.’”

Hathaway then defined that after the preliminary hug, Streep remodeled into the “ice queen” that become her persona, Miranda Priestly. She iced her out for months on the set "until we promoted the film.”

A Reunion May Happen One Day

So Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway weren’t exactly on great speaking terms while on set, but it was all to do with art. In real life, they got along well and Hathaway only has nice things to say of her. “She’s the most amazing, warm person,” she said (via Vanity Fair), before confirming that she would be down for a The Devil Wears Prada reunion.

“Wouldn't that be fun? I’d love to do that,” Hathaway said. Then, sadly, she added, “But I don’t know if there is any plan for it.” Darn!

Here’s hoping that we do get to see a reunion with Hathaway, Streep and the rest of the movie’s cast one day.

Playing Miranda Priestly Was A Turning Point For Streep

While she has played several versatile roles throughout her impressive career in the film industry, playing Miranda Priestly was a turning point for Meryl Streep. One of the untold truths about Meryl Streep is that Miranda Priestly was the first in a sea of characters she had played that made a man approach her and tell her how much he related to the role.

“It took [me until] The Devil Wears Prada to play someone tough, who had to make hard decisions, who was running an organization, [where] a certain type of man [was able] to empathize and feel the story through her," she printed in an interview with NPR (by the use of The List). "That's the first time anyone has ever said that they felt that way.”

Considering the number of famous roles that Streep had played in her career up until that point, that says a lot about the types of female characters that are on offer in Hollywood.

Getting Her The Gig

Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep didn’t just get along well on the set of The Devil Wears Prada (despite Streep staying in character). Streep actually pushed for Hathaway to get the job!

According to Indie Wire, Meryl Streep fought for Anne Hathaway to appear in The Devil Wears Prada as Andy Sachs even though Fox was reluctant to hire her at first. At the time, Hathaway had starred mostly in teenage roles, such as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries (which is still often celebrated on social media).

It was Hathaway’s small role in Brokeback Mountain that won over Streep, who then called Tom Rothman at Fox and said, “Yeah, this girl’s great, and I think we’ll work well together,” (via Indie Wire).

Anne Hathaway Was The Studio’s Ninth Choice

Not only was Fox reluctant to hire Hathaway for the role of Andy, but they actually had several other actresses in consideration ahead of her. Eight other actresses, to be exact. Entertainment Weekly (via Indie Wire) revealed that the studio’s first choice to star opposite Meryl Streep was Rachel McAdams of The Notebook fame.

Other actresses that were in the cards ahead of Anne Hathaway included Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Kate Hudson, and Kirsten Dunst.

Though they’re all great at their craft, we can only imagine one person playing Andy!

Other Actors On Working With Meryl Streep

Anne Hathaway isn’t the only actress who has had a positive experience working with Meryl Streep. According to Shailene Woodley, who worked with the film star on the TV series Big Little Lies, Streep is as much a pro as you’d expert.

“She knows everyone’s lines,” Woodley revealed (via Business Standard). "She is aware of my lines and Nicole Kidman's strains and Reese Witherspoon's traces and most likely the canine's bark, too," she said, speaking of Streep.

When opening up about working with Meryl Streep, Woodley went on to say that the actress is “wonderfully generous” and “a master of her craft.” Her work ethic and kindness are some of the star's favorite things about working with Streep.
